The Power of Coaching: Why Every Entrepreneur Needs a Business Coach

Ok, gang. I am a firm believer in the power of coaching. One year into starting my own business, I found a coach who could provide direction and be a sounding board. Ever since then, for about six years, I’ve had a business coach.

When I was in the corporate world, I was given opportunities to study at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business and go to conferences related to my role. My company invested in my education and learning (they helped pay for some of my masters too!). So, why not invest in yourself when you own a business? This investment should be part of your business budget too.

Even if you aren’t from the corporate world and aren’t used to investing in yourself, it is worth it. An invested coach and client can reach goals and cast future visions that are bigger than what one person can dream up alone.

So, why hire a coach?

This is the power of coaching – it illuminates the blind spots and unveils new possibilities.” They help you cast a vision and also guide you to start making a plan to work ON the business and not IN the business. They help you get out of your head!

Why? Because they see the larger picture and have had success in the areas you want to have success in. They’re not your guru, but they are your guide. You are your own guru, but you get to meet guides along your journey that help you navigate. They’ll help you see the rocky edges ahead and the cliffs below and also show you the beautiful landscape on your journey.

And, here’s the thing, my coach has a coach. Most coaches have a coach and a group of peers who encourage each other. The power of a coach and a set of peers is a powerful combination.

It is not always sunshine and rainbows. Often we have to meet our shadow, our uncertainty, and our fears to reach a goal. And when you’re with an invested coach, they can meet you in your shadow. Let you sit in it and encourage you and guide you on the next steps. They’re also there to celebrate with you too. Both are equally important.

How long does it take to see results?

This depends. I always suggest having the same coach for at least a year. Coaches help you become the person you want to be so that you can accomplish new and often scary goals you have for your business. Give yourself time to become the person you are choosing to be. It takes time to start thinking differently. Give yourself time to set goals and cast a vision. Once you set the goals and begin believing in yourself (the confidence part), start taking action, the DO part. As you take action and grow and learn, achieve, and face setbacks, you will begin to see what is working well. And you’ll keep doing more of that. As you find the sweet spot, you will begin reaching your goals, the HAVE part.
